पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार सूर्य देव अपने पुत्र शनि देव को पसंद नहीं करते थे. इसी कारण उन्होंने शनि को उनकी मां छाया से अलग कर दिया था. माता और पुत्र को अलग करने के कारण सूर्य देव को कुष्ठ रोग का श्राप मिला था. सूर्य देव को कुष्ठ रोग से पीड़ित देख सूर्य देव के दूसरे बेटे यमराज ने तपस्या की थी. जिसके वजह से दोस्तों यमराज की कड़ी तपस्या के बाद सूर्य देव कुष्ठ रोग से मुक्त हुए थे.

परन्तु सूर्य देव ने क्रोध में आकर शनि देव और उनकी माता के घर ‘कुंभ’ को जला दिया था. जिसके बाद सूर्य देव के इस कदम से शनि और छाया को काफी दुख हुआ था. फिर यमराज ने सूर्य देव को समझाया था. यमराज की बात सुनने के बाद सूर्य देव, शनि देव और छाया से मिलने के लिए उनके घर पहुंचे थे.

वहीं कुंभ के जलने के बाद वहां सबकुछ जलकर खाक में तब्दील हो चुका था परन्तु काला तिल जस का तस बना हुआ था. सूर्य के घर पधारने के बाद शनि देव ने उनकी पूजा काले तिल से की थी. जिसके बाद शनि देव को उनका दूसरा घर ‘मकर’ मिला था. शनि देव ने जिस तरह से सूर्य को तिल से पूजा था तभी से ये मान्यता है कि छाया के घर में सुख की प्राप्ति हुई थी. उसी दिन से मकर संक्रांति पर तिल का विशेष महत्व माना जाता है।

मकर संक्रांति के दिन सिर्फ गुड़ और तिल खाया ही नहीं जाता, बल्कि पानी में तिल डालकर भी स्नान किया जाता है. धार्मिक के अलावा मकर संक्रांति के दिन तिल और गुड़ का वैज्ञानिक महत्व भी है. मकर संक्रांति के समय उत्तर भारत में सर्दियों का मौसम रहता है और तिल-गुड़ की तासीर गर्म होती है. जिसके कारण सर्दियों में गुड़ और तिल के लड्डू खाने से शरीर में गर्म रहता है. साथ ही ये शरीर में रोग प्रतिरोधक क्षमता को बढ़ाने का काम भी करता है.
